Today a gentleman came into RISE needing everything. He was just released from Linn Co jail and as often happens, everything he owned (ID, clothes, wallet) were stolen or thrown away while he was incarcerated. He came in devastated. He told me he had never been homeless before and felt overwhelmed. He told me his ‘story,’ He was born in Mississippi, moved back and forth from MS to FL until settling in Chicago when he was 11 years old. It was then that he quit school and joined a gang. He said he had father figures in the gang. He was first sent to prison at age 20 for 6 years and has been in and out of jail – yearly – since then. But now, well now he is ready to change his life and RISE is there to help him. His story continues . . .
